Container ships running on alcohol and power hungry AI

It's time for the Greenifs newsletter is here. ๐ŸŒŽ Let's get into it.๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ“ฐ News of the week:

  • ๐Ÿ›ณ๏ธThe largest #shippingcontainers operator in the world Maersk Group has set the target to have a neutral #carbonfootprint by 2040. And unlike other companies, it seems to be set on achieving this goal. The first ship running on #carbonneutral methanol is already a part of its fleet. By 2025 Hyundai Motor Company (ํ˜„๋Œ€์ž๋™์ฐจ) 18 more ships will join the fleet.
  • ๐Ÿฆ Probiotics are helpful not only for your digestion. These awesome bacteria may be the answer to cutting 75% of carbon emissions in certain sectors by replacing chemicals. Pre-waxing grey fabric to ensure they absorb dyes better, stain removal, treatment of textile effluents, odour elimination, and bleaching of paper are the main areas of research.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹2023 belongs to AI. Whatever our opinion of it is, OpenAI and Midjourney are the companies to watch. However, #ai is very power hungry! Training a single model uses as much energy as 120 US homes would consume in a year. That training generated 502 tonnes of carbon emissions.

โœ…Proofs of building sustainability

Choosing your next house, office, or commercial building? Here are a few important certificates you should know that prove their sustainability.

  • BREEAM Official - The absolute standard, when it comes to commercial building sustainability evaluation. A credit based score is given to all aspects of the building. Guidance is offered on operational changes that can improve environmental efficiency alongside financial, legal, health and image benefits.
  • LEED is the USA equivalent of BREEAM. It evaluates not only commercial buildings, but also building complexes and even whole neighbourhoods. Based on the same principles, it is also praised for diligent evaluation and accurate suggestions for improvement.

๐Ÿ™Fun and interesting facts:

Have you ever heard of #bluecarbon? It refers to the carbon captured and stored by marine and coastal ecosystems. Blue carbon ecosystems, such as mangroves, seagrass meadows, and salt marshes, are highly effective at capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In fact, these ecosystems can sequester carbon at a rate that is several times higher than that of terrestrial forests.
