๐Ÿ”ŒThe G7 minister meeting in Sapporo, Japan agreed that no more power will be generated from fossil fuels by 2050. To achieve this the members pledged to collectively increase offshore wind capacity by 150 gigawatts by 2030 and solar capacity to more than 1 terawatt, as well as greatly limiting investments in natural gas use for power generating.

๐Ÿ’Š The World Health Organization released research about the climate effects that the #tobaccoindustry creates. Just one cigarette filter can pollute 500 L of sea water. It is the most abundant trash item on earth that cannot be recycled. It is also one of the most major water intensive sectors that destroyed entire countries of ecosystems. ๐Ÿ›๏ธUSA climate strategy pillars

As one of the 2 biggest polluters in the world, the USA has a lot to change to become carbon neutral. Here's how it aims to achieve this:

  • #carboncapture is the name of the game. President Biden wants decarbonize the energy sector fully in 12 years. The Inflation Reduction Act, which comes into effect next year will allow energy companies to choose whether to build gas burning plants with direct carbon capture and storage facilities, or use renewable energy. This should greatly increase renewable energy generation.
  • The second technology that is heavily invested in is direct air capture. The U.S. government has offered $3.5 billion in grants to build the factories that will capture and permanently store the gas - the largest such effort globally to help halt climate change through Direct Air Capture (DAC). It is seen as the most promising way to reduce the concentration of CO2 in the air, however the technology is still in very early stages of development.

How does direct air capture work? The air contains only 0.04% of CO2. So capturing it is not easy. We can always be inspired by nature. Capturing carbon is what trees have been doing for millions of years. In short the process looks like this:

After absorption, the captured CO2 can be stored underground, or used in making various chemicals, synthetic fuels or even fertilizers. ๐ŸŒฑ
